Data obtained as part of the 2017 DLHE collection shows that recent graduates from the school have performed well in most destinations areas after leaving the university.

  • The graduate level employment data shows that 74% of employed leavers were in graduate level work, which is 6% below the institutional average of 80%.
  • Those leavers who reported that they were still seeking employment six months after graduating is 1% below the institutional average at 3%.
  • The further study rate for the school shows 37% of leavers choosing to undertake further study, exceeding the university average of 30% by 7%, helping to reduce the impact of the lower graduate level employment rate.
  • 54% of leavers are in any form of employment, which is 5% below the average.
  • These figures all contribute to producing a performance indicator (PI)* score of 83% for the school which matches the institutional score of 83%.

Department Summary

Politics

The department has performed well across the main outcomes groups of further study and graduate level employment.

  • The graduate level employment figure is 3% above the average of all Sussex departments with 83% of employed leavers being in graduate level work.
  •  The overall employment figure at 47% is 12% below the university average of 59%.
  • The rate of unemployment for leavers from the department is above the school average at 8% although this is only four individuals.
  • Leavers from this department chose to undertake further study at a much higher rate than the university average with 41% of leavers choosing to study, this helps to mitigate the negative impact of the low overall employment rate..
  • This data gives the department a PI score of 84%, which is 1% above the university average.

Sussex Law School

The department is another strong performer and their graduates have recorded some excellent outcomes this year.

  • The overall employment rate of 51% is 8% below the average rate across all departments.
  • 79% of these leavers are in graduate level employment, 1% below the university average.
  • Leavers have performed strongly in terms of unemployment with none indicting that they were still seeking work.
  • The further study rate for the department of 43% is well above the institutional average of 30% and has contributed to reduce the impact of the low employment rate.
  • This data gives the department a PI score of 88%, which is well above the university average of 83%.

Sociology

The department has performed well with above average further study rates.

  • The graduate level employment figure is well below the average of all Sussex departments with 64% of employed leavers being in graduate level work.
  •  The overall employment figure at 64% is 5% above the university average of 59%.
  • The rate of unemployment for leavers from the department is above the school average at 4% although this is only three individuals.
  • Leavers from this department chose to undertake further study at a lower rate than the university average with 24% of leavers choosing to study, this contributes to the performance indicator rate.
  • This data gives the department a PI score of 71%, which is 9% below the university average.
