The Destinations of Leavers From Higher Education 2017: School of Engineering and Informatics

Engineering and Informatics School Summary

Data obtained as part of the 2017 DLHE collection shows that recent graduates from the school have performed well in some areas after leaving the university.

  • The graduate level employment data shows that 88% of employed leavers were in graduate level work, which significantly exceeds the institutional average of 80%.
  • Those leavers who reported that they were still seeking employment six months after graduating exceeds the institutional rate at 10%.
  • The further study rate for leavers is historically much lower than the university average and this pattern has been repeated again this year with 18% of leavers from the school choosing to undertake further study, the university average is 30%. In previous surveys, this lower further study rate has typically been mitigated by a higher employment rate and this year follows that pattern where 66% of ENGINF  leavers are in any form of employment, which is 7% above the average.
  • These figures all contribute to producing a performance indicator (PI)* score of 81% for Engineering and Informatics just below the institutional score of 83%.

Department Summary

Engineering

The department is historically one of those that has good graduate level employment outcomes and this year is no exception.

  • The graduate level employment figure exceeds the average of all Sussex departments, for this metric, with 84% of employed leavers being in graduate level work. The overall employment figure at 64% is 5% above the university average of 59%.
  • The rate of unemployment for leavers from the department is below the school average at 9% but is much higher than the institutional average of 4%.
  • Leavers from this department decide to undertake further study at a lower rate than the school and university average with only 21% of leavers choosing to study.
  • This data gives the department a PI score of 80% just 3% below the university average.

Informatics

The department is a strong performer and their graduates have recorded some excellent outcomes.

  • The overall employment rate of 69% is the fifth highest across all departments.
  • Pleasingly, 94% of these leavers are in graduate level employment, the best performance of any non medicine or social care department.
  • Leavers have performed less strongly in terms of unemployment with 11% indicting that they were still seeking work, although this is actually only 5 individuals.
  • The further study rate for the department of 16% is below the school average and is well below the institutional average of 30%.
  • This data gives the department a PI score of 84% making it joint 10th highest overall.
