The Destinations of Leavers From Higher Education 2017: School of Global Studies

School of Global Studies Summary

Data obtained as part of the 2017 DLHE collection shows that recent graduates from the school have performed well in some areas after leaving the university.

  • The graduate level employment data shows that 71% of employed leavers were in graduate level work, which is below the institutional average of 80%.
  • Those leavers who reported that they were still seeking employment six months after graduating matches the institutional average at 4%.
  • The further study rate for leavers is historically above the university average and this pattern has been repeated again this year with 40% of leavers from the school choosing to undertake further study, the university average is 30%. In previous surveys, this high further study rate has helped to mitigate the lower employment rate and this year follows that trend where 49% of leavers are in any form of employment, which is 10% below the average.
  • These figures all contribute to producing a performance indicator (PI)* score of 81% for the school just 2% below the institutional score of 83%.

Department Summary

Anthropology

The department has performed well across the main outcomes groups of further study and graduate level employment.

  • The graduate level employment figure is well above the average of all Sussex departments with 92% of employed leavers being in graduate level work, which is 12% above average and is the equal 3rd highest rate across all departments. The overall employment figure at 42% is 17% below the university average of 59%.
  • The rate of unemployment for leavers from the department is above the school average at 10% although this is only three individuals.
  • Leavers from this department decide to undertake further study at a higher rate than the university average with 35% of leavers choosing to study.
  • This data gives the department a PI score of 85%, which is 2% above the university average.

International Development

The department is a strong performer and their graduates have recorded some excellent outcomes this year.

  • The overall employment rate of 42% is one of the lowest rates across all departments.
  • 75% of these leavers are in graduate level employment, 5% below the university average.
  • Leavers have performed strongly in terms of unemployment with none indicting that they were still seeking work.
  • The further study rate for the department of 42% is above the school average and far exceeds the institutional average of 30%.
  • This data gives the department a PI score of 88% making it joint 4th highest overall.

  • The rate of unemployment for leavers from the department is below the school average at 2% although this is only one individual.
  • Leavers from this department decide to undertake further study at a rate that matches the university average with 30% of leavers choosing to study.
  • This data gives the department a PI score of 74%, which is 9% below the university average.

International Relations

The department has performed well across the important outcomes group of further study.

  • The graduate level employment figure is below the average of all Sussex departments with 60% of employed leavers being in graduate level work, which is 20% below average and is the 2nd lowest rate across all departments. The overall employment figure at 32% is 27% below the university average of 59%.
  • The rate of unemployment for leavers from the department is below the school average at 3% although this is only one individual.
  • Leavers from this department decide to undertake further study at a much higher rate than the university average with 58% of leavers choosing to study, which is 28% above average and by far the highest rate at Sussex.
  • This data gives the department a PI score of 83%, which matches the university average score.
