The Destinations of Leavers From Higher Education 2017: School of Business, Management and Economics

Business, Management and Economics School Summary

Data obtained as part of the 2017 DLHE collection shows that recent graduates from the school have performed well after leaving the university.

  • The graduate level employment data shows that 89% of employed leavers were in graduate level work, which significantly exceeds the institutional average of 80%.
  • Those leavers who reported that they were still seeking employment six months after graduating matches the institutional rate at a credible 4%.
  • The further study rate for BMEc leavers is historically much lower than the university average and this pattern has been repeated again this year with 20% of leavers from the school choosing to undertake further study, the university average is 30%. In previous surveys, this lower further study rate has typically been mitigated by a higher employment rate and this year follows that pattern where 69% of BMEc leavers are in any form of employment, which is a full ten percent above the average.
  • These figures all contribute to producing a very positive performance indicator (PI)* score of 88% for BMEc exceeding the institutional score of 83%.

Department Summary

Business and Management

The department is historically one of the top performers in terms of graduate prospects and this year is no exception.

  • The graduate level employment figures place the department in the top 5 of all Sussex departments, for this metric, with 92% of employed leavers being in graduate level work. The overall employment figure matches the school average of 69%.
  • The rate of unemployment for leavers from the department is above the school average at 5% but the absolute figure is exceedingly low at only five individuals.
  • Leavers from this department decide to undertake further study at a lower rate than the school and university average with only 19% of Business and Management leavers choosing to study.
  • This data gives the department a PI score of 89% making it the third highest overall and the top department excluding those in medicine or social care.

Economics

The department is another strong performer and their graduates have recorded some excellent outcomes.

  • The overall employment rate of 70% is the third highest across all departments and is the top performing department when medicine and social care areas are excluded.
  • Pleasingly, 85% of these leavers are in graduate level employment.
  • Leavers have also performed strongly in terms of unemployment with just two percent indicting that they were still seeking work.
  • The further study rate for the department of 21% exceeds the school average but is still far from the institutional average.
  • This data gives the department a PI score of 87% making it the fifth highest overall .
