Libraries & Archives: Training

Training

The qualifications you need to get started in this sector

Overview

Many people start working in roles that don't require a qualification, but in higher level roles, having a qualification in this field becomes more important

Some institutions offer graduate traineeships. Often these are run by CILIP and provide a good start to training in this sector

There are accredited MA courses in librarianship and archives. These qualifications are quite similar, and people can sometimes get work in an archive with a library qualification, or vice versa. Though it does make it more difficult

If you don't want to do further study, CILIP's ACLIP qualification allows you to study while you work

Getting into Libraries

CILIP (the libraries professional body) offers training that can get you started on a library career

A postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience is necessary for many high level library jobs
