Ian McEwan


Studied: English Literature

Graduated: 1970

McEwan did a creative writing MA after his course at Sussex. His first published work came out in 1975 and he has been producing a steady amount of work since then.


Phillipa Gregory


Studied: History

Graduated: 1978

Gregory came to university to do English, but transferred to History. She feels that the research she does on each book is similar to what she would do in her BA.

She went on to work for BBC radio before doing a doctorate in 18th century literature. Her first novel came out in 1987.


Studied: English and Media Studies

After graduating Sarra Manning spent three years as a freelance writer before getting a staff job on Just Seventeen magazine, she went on to edit magazines such as Elle Girl.

She has written three adult novels, and twelve young adult novels
