How to get helpful work experience and get started


Many companies offer graduate schemes which include training in a particular field

Usually, for accountants, this is ACA or ACCA training. This can require a 2.1 degree and good academic results.

However, some companies offer AAT training, which is a way into the profession that does not require a degree. Some of these schemes are open to graduates with lower degree scores

You can work for an accounting firm, or in a corporation with in-house accountants

Types of Opportunities

Larger Accountancy firms often have well-established ways to get experience

First Years

Insight Days and short internships are offered for first years. Usually, these internships will take place in the Spring

Second years and Penultimate Years

Internships are usually between four to eight weeks long and take place over the Summer


Many firms offer one year placments that can be undertaken as part of a course

Graduate Programmes

These are jobs with firms for graduates. They usually involve a large amount of training
